# Applicant stages

> Name the five stages every applicant moves through in your hiring process.

Every applicant moves through five stages, from the moment they apply to the day you hire them. **Applicant Stages** is where you name those stages to match how your company hires. There are always exactly five stages: you can rename them, but not add or remove any.

Open **Settings → Applicant Stages**. You'll see your current stages, for example:

| Stage | Example name |
| - | - |
| Stage 1 | **Applied** |
| Stage 2 | **Matching Interview** |
| Stage 3 | **Ability Interview** |
| Stage 4 | **Offering** |
| Stage 5 | **Hired** |

## Rename your stages

1. Click **Edit** at the top right.
2. Type a new name for any stage. Every stage needs a name.
3. Click **Save**.

The new names appear everywhere stages are shown: the [Pipeline](/hiring/pipeline), the stage boxes on [Applicants](/hiring/applicants/overview) and [Talent Pools](/hiring/talent-pools), and the funnel in [Reports](/hiring/reports).

<Tip>
  Name each stage after what happens in it, such as **Phone Screen** or **Technical Interview**, rather than a number. Everyone on your team, and every report, becomes easier to read.
</Tip>
